The first application of Samsung Display's QD-OLED technology is not a TV! Display or starter

CINNO Research Industry News, Samsung Display (hereinafter SDC) is developing the first application of QD-OLED technology or not a TV but a display product.

According to a report from Korean media Sedaily on September 18, SDC will begin mass production of QD-OLEDs in the second half of the year, and will simultaneously produce 32/34"-inch display products. Although SDC evaluates TV and display products simultaneously, the display products are more conducive to attracting large Buyer Samsung Electronics.

SDC produces display QD-OLED products, which is expected to bypass Samsung Electronics’ internal policy of “not producing large-size OLED TVs”. Although Samsung Electronics recently obtained SDC TV QD-OLED samples, it did not give positive product adoption opinions. According to industry analysis, this tone will be maintained until at least next year. However, on the contrary, the adoption of QD-OLED display products has a relatively positive trend.

From the production level, SDC is also positive about displays, or it will adopt a mixed cutting (MMG) method that simultaneously manufactures large and medium-sized displays on a large board. Omdia predicts that SDC will choose a mixed cut of two 82" TV panels and three 32-inch displays, or a mixed cut of two 78-inch and six 27-inch displays in order to achieve efficient production.

And this can also be differentiated from LG Display (hereinafter LGD). LGD, which focuses on large-size OLED products, has not yet entered the OLED display market, while SDC is targeting the 32-inch 8K display market. LGD has entered this market since 2017 and mainly produces LCD panels. Although LGD has a 48-inch OLED TV panel that can be used in gaming, as a TV product, it is too large for gaming. However, the e-sports market in Europe and South Korea is still well received.
