The antenna under the screen is coming! South Korea's KREEMO develops the world's first display with built-in transparent antenna

South Korea's KREEMO company developed the world's first display built-in antenna. KREEMO is in close discussions with four major North American customers to commercialize the technology. KREEMO is accelerating its entry into the global market with unique antenna technology best suited to the metaverse.

According to Korean media ETNews, as the world's leading provider of 5G millimeter-wave antenna solutions, the built-in antenna (AOD) for transparent displays developed by KREEMO is characterized by the ability to transmit and receive high-capacity data smoothly in 360 degrees.

The communication speed of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication is faster than that of LTE (Long Term Evolution, Long Term Evolution), and the data capacity of transmission and reception is larger. The number of high-performance antennas on board has increased. However, for the convenience of the user, it is difficult to increase the size of the device.

KREEMO has made a new attempt to combine the antenna and the display. By improving space utilization, data can be received and sent smoothly in 360 degrees.

Also, the existing display touch sensor functionality can still be used. The key is to make array antennas invisible to the human eye with thin and thin electrodes in display panels.

Current antennas are typically mounted on the back or side of the instrument, so they can only send and receive signals from the back or side of the device. This is not a problem when receiving low frequency signals, but when sending and receiving massive data such as the metaverse, there will be signal interference. Especially when the machine is held in hand or the phone is placed on the stand, the interference of the signal is maximized.

In-display antennas can be mounted on high-definition screens or glass of smartphones, augmented reality (AR), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for gaming devices, or liquid crystal displays (LCDs). As a transparent antenna invisible to the naked eye, it also stands out in terms of design elements. In addition, the production of the built-in antenna will be carried out by the partner Dongwoo Fine-chem.

Commercialization of this technology will also soon be possible. Currently, KREEMO is conducting various discussions with four major North American companies on joint development of new products and cooperation. Meaningful results are expected within the year.

KREEMO has secured the most suitable antenna technology for the 5G Metaverse Era, and thus has received extensive attention from the industry. KREEMO is an enterprise founded by Professor Hong Yuanbin, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Pohang University of Technology (POSTECH). Founded in December 2016, the company is headquartered in Seoul and has a R&D base in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The company is committed to providing consumer and industrial solutions for mmWave and 5G communications. In November 2021, KREEMO was selected as one of the top 100 Korean start-up companies in materials, parts and equipment.

The 5G stacked patch antenna developed by KREEMO has also attracted the attention of the industry. Recently, KREEMO has cooperated with Mixcomm, a professional 5G communication technology company in the United States, to develop a 5G module that can receive signals smoothly in 360 degrees.

KREEMO's antenna technology promises to be the metaverse antenna platform in the rapidly growing global market. Park Junho, the co-representative of KREEMO, said: "KREEMO's world's first antenna technology with 360-degree beam coverage will provide users with uninterrupted hyper-connectivity and ultra-realistic services, and contribute to the prosperity and development of the metaverse market," adding that "We will participate in the 2022 Mobile World Congress (MWC) to demonstrate our unique technological prowess".
